Drinking from an animal-head shaped vessel whilst feet in the stirrups before leaving or arriving home from hunting was a popular practice in the late 18th and 19th centuries.
The Greyhound Stirrup Cup is designed to replicate the hound head; the details of its deep-set eyes and fur thoroughly incised to accentuate the design. The cup's interior is gilded with 24K gold.
